The Daily Five

I am very excited to implement The Daily Five this year in my kindergarten classroom.
I have heard so much about this program over the years, but now I am going for it!
May my journey to discovery begin....

Step 1: READ THIS BOOK!

The "Two Sisters", who started this program,
have a wonderful website with tons of ideas.

Optional Book
You can use the strategies from The CAFE Book by The Sisters to help enhance mini lessons for the Daily 5 block. It is NOT necessary to use this book for your mini lessons.

So, what is the Daily 5?
The Daily 5 is more than a management system or a curriculum framework, it is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence and yes, it can happen in Kindergarten!  This is what your students are doing when you are working with a small group, working one-on-on or during assessments.  During the Daily Five, the kindergartners practice
Five Essential Skills for becoming great independent readers and writers:

Read to Self
Read to Someone
Listening to Reading
Working on Words
Working on Writing

Summary:
The D5 in Kindergarten:
1. The students will learn to sit quietly and Read to Self.  We have been learning that there are  3 ways to read a book: Read the Pictures, Read the Words, and Retell the story.
2. The students will Work on Writing. This is an extra writing time in addition to the Writer’s Workshop, that is conducted at least 3x a week.  This extra time allows the students to add more details to their pictures or stories from Writer’s Workshop, write a letter to a friend or create a book.  These are all activities Kindergarten students love to do.
3. The students also practice  Reading to Someone (commonly known as Buddy Reading).  During this time, they will take turns listening, reading and summarizing with a partner.
4. The students will Listen to Reading at the Listening Center or whenever we have volunteers that can come in to read to us.  They will listen to books on tape/cd and will follow along in the book or listen.  The children will also read along with stories on the computer at sites like starfall.com.
5. In addition to all of the above, the students will also do Letter and Word Work. Kindergartners can only begin to read the words when they know the letters and corresponding sounds and know a handful of sight words.  Letter and Word Work is conducted through art projects, literacy centers, songs, and using manipulatives such a magnetic letters, yarn, and wiki sticks to make, create & spell.

Step 2: ORGANIZE YOUR LIBRARY

Step 3: COLLECT some BOXES or BAGS for students book boxes
I use large Ziplock bags. You can use cereal boxes, Target bins, baskets.

Step 4: DESIGN YOUR SCHEDULE

Step 5: CHOOSE BOOKS to use during your LESSONS

Cute ideas for ending each round:
Use a chime, bell or cute signal.
Give the kinders smelly stickers (chap stick) that you can rub on the back of their hand.  This encourages them to clean up quickly and come to the rug.
